It´s safe to say that Porto is a year-round destination?
Well, recently there has been a massive increase in the number of tourists visiting Porto, and this popularity has led to the extension of the tourist season, so that now, the tourist season is almost year-round. Don´t forget that Porto won previously many European Best Destination awards. Porto is a year-round destination if you enjoy travelling during winter, seeking a lovely city with the opportunity of booking Oporto hotel at the best price. With that said, Porto will have significantly better winter weather than most European cities, and will be much warmer than Northern Europe/America/Canada, but there is the high possibility of rain during anyday of the week.
Is Porto´s weather better than Lisbon or Algarve?
In sort of matter, Porto is a a lot cooler than Lisbon and the Algarve (the southern coastline of Portugal, next to the Mediterranean), and unfortunately, Porto´s winters are so much wetter.
Porto is the better destination for the peak summer months (starting from May to September). But also, Lisbon attracts many more visitors than Porto due being Portugal´s capital, but this popularity means that in the summer Lisbon can feel very crowded and overrun with so much more tourists at every place.
Porto has many similar characteristics to Lisbon; a rich culture, fascinating tourist attractions, buzzing nightlife, and excellent beaches for surfing or skin tanning. The Algarve boasts some of the finest weather of mainland Europe, but the region is more focused on family and package holidays, and the cities do not offer the same diversity as Porto or Lisbon, your best destination for a small budget city-break.
The Peak Season for your travel (July – August)
Porto´s peak tourist season is probably July and August, and during this period there is a buzzing atmosphere in the city. You can tell that the city is fully crowed with people from all corners of the world. The summer weather in Porto is hot, but not unbearable, with the temperatures lessened by the proximity of the sea (Atlantic Ocean), and its cooling breezes at the evening. Weather in Porto invites you to a nice walk at Porto beaches´ shores .
The only issue with visiting Porto during the summer, is the VERY HIGH demand for accommodation (Porto hotel rooms, Porto Apartments, Porto Villas) and flights often outstrips supply. This means that prices become over-inflated, and if you book lately then you may find it absolutely sold out. If you are considering visiting Porto during the peak season, when the weather in Porto looks the best, you should always book your flights to Porto and accommodation well in advance for many months previously. The mid-season (May, June and September)
The mid-season is a great time of year to visit Porto, and is the best time of year for sightseeing, day trips or a touring holiday around Portugal. This season provides the chance to explore the historic sights without many tourists everywhere, and is a more peaceful and relaxing holiday, being this way your best experience in Porto. The mid-season still offers some nice weather, while Porto´s accommodation will be at very reasonable prices. If you are visiting Porto during the mid-season, check previously weather in Porto and plan to be based longer in the city and take day trips to Braga, Aveiro, Guimarães and Viana do Castelo.
The winter and low season
The low season to visit Porto is definitely from October to April, that´s when the weather in Porto gets wetter and cooler closer to mid-winter. The main issue with the winter season is that the weather is very unpredictable (you may have sunny days, or rainy days, it depends), one week could be sunny and pleasant, while the next could be very wet and chilly. As Porto is a large city the tourism services never fully shut for the winter, but there will be less frequent services, such as the Douro river cruises or tour buses.
Suggestion: The low season is ideal for a last-minute Porto weekend break – Check the weather forecasts and if the weather is predicted to be dry book an inexpensive weekend away.
